Description:
Providing clean water for inland and coastal boating activities
is a good business practice for about 360 Texas recreational marinas.
The Clean Texas Marina Program is a proactive partnership between
government, industry and extension designed to encourage marinas,
boatyards and boaters to use simple, innovative solutions to keep
Texas coastal and inland waterway resources clean. The Program recognizes
?Clean Marinas? through an awards program, and conducts outreach
activities to further promote environmentally responsible marina
and boating practices. The basic goal of the Program is pollution
prevention by making marinas, boatyards and boaters more aware of
environmental laws, rules and jurisdictions, and to get marinas
to follow best management practices and be designated ?Clean Marinas.?
The Clean Texas Marina Program is a joint project of the Texas Sea
Grant Extension Program, Marina Association of Texas, Texas General
Land Office (GLO) and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
(TCEQ). We will use a case study driven group discussion to show
how Texas Sea Grant Extension personnel serving as a neutral broker
created the partnership and gained industry participation with government
to meet program objectives. Extension personnel serve as the administrator
for the program and use a marina industry advisory committee made
up of both government and industry to shape policy for the program.
The learning objectives will include recognition of partnership
principles used in the Texas case study and how they might compare
to other cases in Florida and California. We will highlight pollution
prevention methods that work in the recreational industry and how
to get consumers (boaters) to become part of the process. A short
questionnaire will be used to collect feedback from the audience
after the program. Note: This session should be integrated with
case studies from California and Florida.
