A Partnership That Works: Using Three Principles of Extension

Speaker:

Don Jackson,
Project Coordinator,
Florida Sea Grant Extension

Description:
We propose a group discussion centered on a case study. The case study involves the Florida Clean Boating Partnership that administers the state's Clean Marina Program. A short paper will be handed out, and a short PowerPoint presentation will be followed by a 3 question pre-test. The pre-test will lead into an open discussion on establishing and working with a partnership using three important principles of extension to handle the challenges faced in the Florida case study.

Three principles will be discussed: the neutral broker concept, serving as the catalyst for startup, and how to provide guidance without management authority. The Florida case study will be contrasted with procedures used in two other states in related sessions ? those used in California and in Texas. Emphasis will be on the role of the extension agent.

The learning objectives will include how to recognize the three principles mentioned above, and how to apply them to other projects than those discussed in the three coordinated sessions. A post-test will evaluate the participant's level of understanding of these three principles, and discussion of the answers will serve as the wrap-up and summary for the integration of the three sessions using three different state's case studies.

Note: This session is integrated with those illustrating California and Texas programs similar to the Florida example.
