In many rural counties, gaining access to relevant demographic, education, social, and economic data is not easy to come by, or, at a minimum, difficult to locate in one centralized site.
The Community Tool Box provides an extensive resource for free information on essential skills for building healthy communities. It offers more than 7,000 pages of practical guidance in creating change and improvement.
One of the important resources that community development researchers and practitioners need is sound data. We have attempted to identify a variety of secondary data resources that provide important insights on the socioeconomic well-being of various places and states across the South. We have not attempted to capture all possible data sources that are available. Rather, we have tried to tap those secondary data resources that we feel best align with our strategic priorities.
The sources are grouped by topic and by Web site. For those who are already familiar with various data sites, we have specified some of the topics you can find at these various Web sites. In addition, we have provided the type of data that can be found at these sites as well as some key data indicators. Our experience tells us that data are most valuable when they can be understood and interpreted correctly.
