Champions for Healthy Kids

Overview

In partnership with the American Dietetic Association Foundation and the President's Challenge, the General Mills Foundation developed the Champions for Healthy Kids grant program in 2002. Each year, the Foundation awards 50 grants of $10,000 each to community-based groups that develop creative ways to help youth adopt a balanced diet and physically active lifestyle.

Federal-State Marketing Improvement Program

Overview

The Program provides matching funds on a competitive basis to State departments of agriculture, State Experiment Stations and other similar State agencies for applied research projects that address barriers, challenges and opportunities in marketing, transportation and distribution of U.S. food and agricultural products. Proposals may deal with any stage of the marketing chain including direct, wholesale and retail. Proposals may involve small, medium or large-scale agricultural entities but should potentially benefit multiple producers or agribusinesses. Of particular interest are proposals that reflect a collaborative approach between the States, academia, the farm sector and other appropriate stakeholders.

FY2006 Food Stamp Program Outreach Grants

Overview

The purpose of this USDA Food and Nutrition Service grant is to implement and study effective strategies to inform and educate potentially eligible low income people not currently participating in the Food Stamp Program about the nutrition benefits of the program, eligibility rules and how to apply so that they can make informed decisions about participation in the program.

National Research Initiative: Rural Development

Overview

Over the next 10 years, the Rural Development program will pursue three objectives to increase economic opportunity and improve rural quality of life. These objectives include: (1) a measurable reduction in the erosion of rural services and infrastructure through application of successful models of rural and community development; (2) a measurable reduction in the rural broadband gap through strategies successful in promoting infrastructure; and, (3) the successful dissemination of new approaches to enhance rural economic opportunities, rural governance and civic engagement, and local government response to devolution. During FY2006, the Rural Development program will pursue a single research priority designed to achieve these three objectives. This priority is the examination of social, economic, demographic, and/or policy conditions that foster or impede improved quality of life for rural residents, including recommendations for policies and practices effective in creating and sustaining rural community vitality and prosperity.

Overview

The Humana Foundation identifies, funds, and nurtures projects and organizations in three fields: domestic and international health, education, and civic and cultural development in communities where the company has a meaningful presence: mainly in Kentucky, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas. Since its creation in 2001, the Progress Energy Foundation has given more than $54 million in grants to nonprofits in Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina.
