    We are pleased to share with you the latest report of activities undertaken by the SRDC over the course of the fiscal year 2005.   • Deadline Approaching for 2006 Food Assistance and Nutrition Research Innovation Grants Program Request for Proposals
    The SRDC is pleased to announce its continued support for food and nutrition-related research focusing on the South. As in past years, the program is designed to support innovative social sciences-related research that advances our knowledge and understanding of food assistance and nutrition issues impacting vulnerable populations in the South. The deadline date is June 23, 2006. The RFP is available at http://srdc.msstate.edu/06rpf.pdf


  • New Policy Brief Series on Rural Development
    The Rural Sociological Society, in connection with the Southern Rural Development Center and three other Regional Rural Development Centers, recently released a series of briefs based on the RSS book, “Challenges for Rural America in the Twenty-First Century.” The six briefs, each drawn from a different chapter, stress the importance of promoting collective community action and developing the capacity of people and organizations to meet the special needs of rural communities.   • 2006 Report on the Future of the South Released by Southern Growth Policies Board
    Titled “Innovation with a Southern Accent,” this report, released on June 4 at the Southern Innovation Summit in New Orleans, provides recommendations on “creating a Southern culture of knowledge, where learning and innovation are primary social values, and essential to the region’s global competitiveness.” It offers strategies to support and cultivate innovation and includes regional and state-level data in a variety of areas.   • New Report on Community-Based Learning
    Released by the Coalition for Community Schools, “Community-Based Learning: Engaging Students for Success and Citizenship” promotes community-based learning as a motivational strategy for students.   • New Study Looks at Relationship Between Research Universities and Economic Development
    A new report from the Center for Regional Strategies, titled “Research and the Regional Economy: The Research University as a Driver,” offers suggestions for improving economic development by fostering working partnerships between universities and their municipalities.   • Report Examines Small Business Growth in Rural Areas
    Released by the U.S. Small Business Administration, this new study identifies factors that lead to rural small business growth, including the number of high school graduates and the presence of natural amenities, among other things.
