Foundations of Practice: Understanding Communities Online Course Offers Tools for Community Development

October 6 – November 17, 2016

Understanding Communities and Their Dynamics is a Level 1 introduction for the Foundations of Practice Program. It is appropriate for individuals working with community groups in any subject area. The seven-week series begins October 6, 2016 and concludes November 17, 2016. Each week features a 90-minute webinar focusing on topics including demographics, economic development, strategic planning and power structures. Supplemental resources and online discussion opportunities will be available on the course website. Participants should plan to log in at their convenience during the week to explore these topics further, pose questions, investigate additional resources and visit with colleagues in similar situations.

Social Networking Analysis for the Uninitiated – What Is It and What Is It Good for?

Extension programs have a long history of building relationships toward increasing social capital...and an equally long history of inadequately sharing this news with key stakeholders. Social Network Analysis (SNA) is one tool that can help tell the story of the effectiveness of relationship building efforts. SNA is a method that visualizes, as well as quantifies, the depth and breadth of relationships within or among people, groups, or organizations. It can even be used to measure changes in connectivity over time, in groups that are working together towards the same goals. This webinar will provide an introduction to the theory underlying SNA, the uses of SNA, and the methods, tools, and skills needed to conduct SNA projects.

SRDC Co-Sponsors the Small Business Innovation Research Application Webinar Series

The Regional Rural Development Centers in cooperation with the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) have developed the SBIR Application Webinar Series with a focus on improving the funding success rate of applicants to USDA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant programs, specifically for those submitting proposals for Phase I funding. This series consists of three Modules taking place on August 23 & 30 and September 6, 2016 at 1pm CTS. This webinar series will provide an overview of the USDA SBIR Program and eligibility requirements, tips on navigating Grants.gov, the SBIR application process, steps for developing your idea, and resources for developing a strong proposal.

Using Linked Data to Advance Evidence-Based Policy Making: Helping Projects Utilize the U.S. Census Bureau Linkage Infrastructure 

This Request for Proposals (RFP) is soliciting a broad range of research and evaluation pilot studies exploring long-term outcomes of policies and interventions in order to inform public decision makers. We are seeking projects that link state and local administrative data in combination with data available at the Census Bureau to provide policy-relevant insights on public programs. Projects of interest may range in scope from impact evaluations of innovative strategies for delivering Federal programs to needs assessments conducted to more efficiently target services. In addition to full proposals, we also invite letters of interest for future projects. These are intended to gauge the demand from researchers1 and state and local governments for linking their data to the Census Bureau infrastructure and to inform capacity building within all levels of government. Projects may be summarized and disseminated with approval of proposal authors. Strong examples may be considered for future opportunities.
Deadline for application is September 20th, 2016.

Food and Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate and Postgraduate Fellowship (NNF) Grants Program

This grant program supports: (1) training students for Master's and doctoral degrees in food, agricultural and natural resource sciences, and; (2) Special International Study or Thesis/Dissertation Research Travel Allowances (IRTA) for eligible USDA NNF beneficiaries. Awards are specifically intended to support traineeship programs that engage outstanding students to pursue and complete their degrees in USDA mission areas. Applicants provide clarity about the philosophy of their graduate training, and relevance to USDA mission sciences, NIFA priorities and national science education policies and statistics. Applications are being solicited from institutions that confer a graduate degree in at least one of the following Targeted Expertise Shortage Areas: 1) animal and plant production; 2) forest resources; 3) agricultural educators and communicators; 4) agricultural management and economics; 5) food science and human nutrition; 6) sciences for agricultural biosecurity; and 7) training in integrative biosciences for sustainable food and agricultural systems. Deadline for application is September 22th, 2016.

Small Business Innovation Research Program Phase I

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers competitively awarded grants to qualified small businesses to support high quality, advanced concepts research related to important scientific problems and opportunities in agriculture that could lead to significant public benefits. Proposed Phase I projects should prove the scientific or technical feasibility of the approach or concept. Projects dealing with agriculturally related manufacturing and alternative and renewable energy technologies are encouraged across all SBIR topic areas. USDA SBIR's flexible research areas ensure innovative projects consistent with USDA's vision of a healthy and productive nation in harmony with the land, air, and water.

This position is responsible for planning, implementing and assisting extension agents with educational programs in economic development, community development and small business development. Primary duties include, providing technical assistance to entrepreneurs, small business owners, agri-businesses and land owners on financial resources, business planning, marketing, budgeting, efficient agri-business practices, and business development issues; providing support to county staff through the development of curriculum and providing instruction in support of programs such as the Business in Development state contracting program; conducting relevant trainings and workshops for county staff; writing grants and establishing partnerships that pool and/or leverage public and private funds in support of Extension’s mission. Extension Urban Community & Economic Development Specialist, Alabama A&M University

This individual will be responsible for developing programs targeting new, nontraditional, underserved and hard to reach audiences. The selected individual will be expected to help develop small business enterprises for underserved areas and work with local community and business organizations to advance these efforts. The selected individual will use innovative and evidence-based strategies along with cutting edge technologies to design, develop, train, market and evaluate programs for a robust extension education program in nine urban centers across the state of Alabama. The specialist will serve as supervisor for regional agents implementing local community economic development programs in the urban centers. He/she must be able to promote effective working and team relationships, practice extension scholarship by conducting needs assessments, identifying priorities and measuring program impact. 16th Annual New Partners for Smart Growth: Saint Louis, MO

February 2-4, 2017

The nation’s largest smart growth and sustainability event, the theme for the 2017 conference is “Practical Tools and Innovative Strategies for Creating Great Communities,” underscoring a stronger emphasis on implementation tools and strategies, and new technologies that will help communities NOW! The program will span three full days with post-conference events scheduled for Sunday, February 5. The main program will kick off on Thursday morning, February 2, with a plenary starting at 10:00 am, and continue through Saturday afternoon, closing at 4:00 pm. The schedule includes a dynamic mix of plenaries, breakouts, implementation workshops, focused training sessions, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and coordinated networking activities. It will also feature exciting tours of local model projects in and around the greater St. Louis region.

Engaging in Collective Purpose 2017 Urban Extension Conference: MPLS/St. Paul, MN

May 7-11, 2017

The conference program will take place Monday, May 8-11th and preceded by the National Urban Leaders meeting on Sunday May 7th. The conference will provide opportunities for Extension professionals from all program areas to share their research and innovative educational strategies that address the needs of urban, suburban, and peri-urban populations as well as urban-rural interdependencies. The program planning committee plans for participants to learn about cutting edge research and to see innovative outreach efforts that successfully transfer research-based information to various urban clientele. Proposals may be for presentations, workshops, posters, and panels (defined below) for the 2017 Conference. Abstracts that highlight research and/or outreach activities that involve partnerships between practitioners and Extension professionals are especially encouraged. NERCRD Rural Business Innovation and Economic Development Workshop: Charleston, WV

May 15-17, 2017

The Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development (NERCRD) is pleased to announce a new conference in its acclaimed What Works workshop series. The conference theme this year is Rural Business Innovation and Economic Development, and the event will be held in conjunction with Create West Virginia’s Universal Design conference, at the Civic Center in Charleston, WV on May 15-17, 2017. 1 The conference seeks to answer the question, How do we (re)create buildings, communities, learning places, programs and products to better meet needs of 21st Century people? To this end we seek presentations that may include papers, posters or educational (Extension) programs addressing some aspect of new or innovative product development in a broad sense. Topics may include new products, services (such as agri-tourism) or business processes, including those based in the arts, or creative ways of valorizing while preserving natural assets, including wilderness trails, whitewater rafting and the development of other nature-based recreational opportunities.
