Sustainable Communities: Online Course Explores Community Systems

The Foundations of Practice course, Sustainable Communities, offers you the tools, skills and knowledge to be the trusted resource community groups need in the emerging dialogs around local foods, energy and natural resources. This training, brought to you by the Cooperative Extension System and the Regional Rural Development Centers, provides the background, resources and strategies to support your work in communities. The eight-week series begins February 2, 2017. Each week features a 90-minute webinar focusing on timely topics including Energy, Local Foods, Built Environments, Mobility and Natural Resources.

NIFA Reinforces the Agricultural Education Pipeline

Agricultural science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has been described as a "leaky pipeline," as fewer students remain as they progress through advanced study. USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) education programs are designed to enhance the pipeline through programs that support agricultural workforce development, increase student recruitment and retention, and build capacity.

Community-Centered Design: How to Empower Residents to Shape the Development of their Communities

January 25th, 2017 10:00am CT/11:00am ET

Community-centered design is a methodology that invites a community to imagine and build places that reflect what matters most to them – both as a community and as individuals. Often in Extension, we conduct assessments as a way to identify community needs and determine solutions for solving community problems. There are various methods to gather that local input and, at times, traditional methods for data collection are too time consuming and are not accessible to many people. This session will introduce a community-centered design approach and the engagement tools to support a more accessible, transparent, and democratic process.

Grant Connections

USDA Announces Grants Available to Support the Local Foods Sector

Deadline: Marach 27, 2017

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) today announced the availability of $27 million in grants to fund innovative projects designed to strengthen market opportunities for local and regional food producers and businesses. AMS today announced the request for applications for the Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program, which includes Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) and Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP) grants, and the Federal-State Marketing Improvement Program (FSMIP). These programs and other resources across USDA are helping to revitalize rural America by supporting local and regional food stakeholders.

CONFERENCES, WORKSHOPS, TRAININGS

16th Annual New Partners for Smart Growth: Saint Louis, MO

February 2-4, 2017

The nation’s largest smart growth and sustainability event, the theme for the 2017 conference is “Practical Tools and Innovative Strategies for Creating Great Communities,” underscoring a stronger emphasis on implementation tools and strategies, and new technologies that will help communities NOW! The program will span three full days with post-conference events scheduled for Sunday, February 5. The main program will kick off on Thursday morning, February 2, with a plenary starting at 10:00 am, and continue through Saturday afternoon, closing at 4:00 pm. The schedule includes a dynamic mix of plenaries, breakouts, implementation workshops, focused training sessions, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and coordinated networking activities. It will also feature exciting tours of local model projects in and around the greater St. Louis region.

Local Foods Impact Conference: Washington, D.C.

April 3-4, 2017

In partnership with the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, the George Washington University Sustainability Collaborative has planned an action-packed two days. From plenaries with impressive keynoters, to roll-up-your sleeves workshops, we will come together to identify the kinds of metrics and data that will help the new Administration, Congress, and local food leaders better understand and evaluate the impacts of USDA local food investments. Over cocktails and Local Food System Tours we will exchange stories about what’s going on in communities across the country. Before our time together ends, we will make new friends, and envision a pathway forward that continues to build on our success.

National Health Outreach Conference: Annapolis, Maryland

May 2-4, 2017

The conference theme ‘Navigating the World of Health: A Sea of Opportunity’ will set the stage as we explore new ideas, best practices, promising research, and innovative educational outreach. This conference seeks to provide a multi-disciplinary and ecological view of health and wellness research, practice and outreach education. The conference will offer a combination of workshops, seminars, research updates, theoretical perspectives, and thought-provoking dialogue to fully engage participants in the dynamic and complex world of health. Using the Social Ecological Model as our framework, the conference tracks will offer opportunity for participants to gain new perspectives on how the multifaceted nature of our society, and how each sector influences health.

Engaging in Collective Purpose 2017 Urban Extension Conference: MPLS/St. Paul, MN

May 7-11, 2017

The conference program will take place Monday, May 8-11th and preceded by the National Urban Leaders meeting on Sunday May 7th. The conference will provide opportunities for Extension professionals from all program areas to share their research and innovative educational strategies that address the needs of urban, suburban, and peri-urban populations as well as urban-rural interdependencies. The program planning committee plans for participants to learn about cutting edge research and to see innovative outreach efforts that successfully transfer research-based information to various urban clientele. Proposals may be for presentations, workshops, posters, and panels (defined below) for the 2017 Conference. Abstracts that highlight research and/or outreach activities that involve partnerships between practitioners and Extension professionals are especially encouraged. We are also looking for innovative ideas that are just that, ideas; which can be presented in an Ignite format. Deadline for proposals is September 30th, 2016

NERCRD Rural Business Innovation and Economic Development Workshop: Charleston, WV

May 15-17, 2017

The Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development (NERCRD) is pleased to announce a new conference in its acclaimed What Works workshop series. The conference theme this year is Rural Business Innovation and Economic Development, and the event will be held in conjunction with Create West Virginia’s Universal Design conference, at the Civic Center in Charleston, WV on May 15-17, 2017. 1 The conference seeks to answer the question, How do we (re)create buildings, communities, learning places, programs and products to better meet needs of 21st Century people? To this end we seek presentations that may include papers, posters or educational (Extension) programs addressing some aspect of new or innovative product development in a broad sense. Topics may include new products, services (such as agri-tourism) or business processes, including those based in the arts, or creative ways of valorizing while preserving natural assets, including wilderness trails, whitewater rafting and the development of other nature-based recreational opportunities. Submission deadline is December 13, 2016

Call for Proposals, Deadline February 6, 2017

This multidisciplinary conference has traditionally focused on native and foreign-born Latino newcomers, but is interested in the challenges inherent in multicultural changing communities, including the experiences of all newcomers, faith groups, and marginalized groups. The integration of these very diverse groups is being studied by academics and pursued by stakeholders, as the newcomers seek to become part and parcel of the social, economic, and cultural fabric of their new communities. The conference theme this year is “Todos Juntos: Collaboration and Unity in Uncertain Times.” Todos Juntos means “all together”, and seeks to build collaboration across sectors and unite communities across differences in the common goal of supporting everyone’s wellbeing in our changing, multicultural communities.
