| With the increased number of plant closings resulting in dislocated workers in search of new skills or up-grading/retooling present skills, community colleges are assuming a major role in workforce development activities. Southeastern Community College, located in rural Columbus County, NC, has become the ray of hope for over 3500 citizens who have lost their jobs in the last 3 to 5 years due to plant closings. Through its innovative training programs, JobLink Career Center services, Ladder to Success (welfare to work) program, and strong collaborative efforts with area agencies, SCC has emerged as a leader in workforce development. In additional to workforce development training, SCC is a viable player in the economic development arena - locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Through its aggressive industrial training programs and services and small business center offerings, the college is a catalyst for change in an economically distressed area. What is happening in Columbus County is a prime example of how a rural, economically distressed area can be positively impacted by programs and services provided by a community college. | ||
