Do you want to improve your quality of life? Of course you do! And the Internet can help! What are we doing to help citizens in rural southeastern North Carolina? Under the leadership of Southeastern Community College, Columbus County is participating in the e-communities program, which is funded by the e-NC Initiative to connect all North Carolinians to the Internet and a better future. E-communities Columbus County was created to develop successful connectivity efforts that are locally driven and reflective of the needs, values and relationships that define the county. This project is a grassroots effort to connect the citizens to the Internet and a better future. Through extensive community outreach efforts (public forums, web page, surveys, focus groups), a comprehensive technology plan was developed for Columbus County. Areas addressed in the plan include: e-Learning, e-Commerce, e-Health, e-Agriculture, and e-Government. The plan will allow community agencies (public and private) to apply for technology related grants from the various funding agencies. This innovative technology project can be easily replicated in rural, as well as urban, settings. It is a unique way of showing the world how the phrase "you've got mail" takes on a whole new meaning and truly how "It's a small world after all."
