| Rural communities often are held back by the small size and homogeneous make-up of local leadership. Expanding the leadership base can bring the community new energy, new ideas and new directions. Through participation in the Rural Community College Initiative, two colleges have developed community leadership programs that are drawing new leaders into civic affairs. In this Roundtable session, Southeast and Meridian Community colleges will share models for college-led programs to develop broad-based community leadership in rural areas and small cities. They will discuss why their colleges initiated these programs; the kinds of people they target; how their programs are structured; what skills and content they teach; what barriers they have faced; and what impact they have had on their communities so far. | ||
