Reflecting Design
The design aspects of the Interface can be pulled from or reflect:
- The features of the physical business, such as the color combination of the logo or store sign used for the Web site background and buttons and
- The theme of the business, as in a wilderness theme that coordinates with use of ‘rustic’ looking lettering.
There are many elements of the physical business or theme to use as inspiration for the Web site design. The resulting design Interface should reinforce the mood or feeling resulting from interaction with the business’ offerings. Click on the link above for the Development of Experiential Web sites assessment tool, which includes a table to determine the fit between the feeling resulting from design aspects and the feeling from the physical business or theme.
For example, bright, crisp colors of the garden nursery Web site background and clean, crisp lettering can create a feeling of joy and rejuvenation, similar to the feeling resulting from walking among the nursery’s stock. Whereas the laid back, ‘rough around the edges’ blues club is captured by the text that looks like it was done on an old typewriter and a background resembling the coarse texture of a plastered wall. The use of the more mellow blue matches the deeply felt nature of the music and makes a visual connection between the site and the business’ name.
